Zeekr’s LFP wonder battery: 10.5 minutes for 80 percent charge

Geely’s premium subsidiary Zeekr has introduced a new battery variant with lithium iron phosphate chemistry (LFP), which, according to the company, can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in 10.5 minutes. This means that the new LFP batteries can be recharged more quickly than the nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries previously used by the company. Even at very low temperatures of down to minus ten degrees Celsius, charging should still be possible in 30 minutes, according to the manufacturer. The C-rate of the battery is 5.5, meaning that the battery could theoretically be charged 5.5 times per hour. Nowadays, C rates of between 2 and 3 are common; some Chinese battery manufacturers claim a rate of 5 or 6. LFP batteries are considered to be resistant. They are less flammable and can withstand more charging cycles, meaning the battery lasts longer. In addition, no cobalt or nickel is required for production. Disadvantage: The energy density of LFP batteries is lower than that of NMC batteries. However, fast charging times could compensate for this disadvantage. The new battery is set to make its debut in Zeekr 007. Source: Handelsblatt
