Škoda: New life for fabric scraps, fishing nets and PET bottles

The Czech car manufacturer is taking the next step towards achieving its sustainability goals. Through the innovative use of materials such as Recytitan and Technofil, the new Škoda Elroq creates perspectives for sustainable automotive design. Selected materials underline Škoda’s commitment to environmental protection and to reducing the carbon footprint of its vehicles: seat covers and upholstery are made from recycled plastic bottles and, for the first time, from recycled used clothing. Škoda processes these into new fibers and high-quality fabrics for the Elroq. In the Design Selection Loft, the manufacturer raises the Elroq’s sustainability level with Recytitan. It is used for door panels, seat covers, armrests, knee pads and the dashboard. Recytitan consists of 78 percent recycled PET, which is made from plastic bottles, for example. The remaining 16 percent comes from newly manufactured PET and six percent from fibers based on used clothing. The fiber blend is produced without the use of chemicals. The perfect balance of comfort, durability and sustainability is the result of careful processing during spinning and warping. For the Design Selection Lodge, Škoda uses Technofil, which consists of 75 percent recycled ECONYL® fibers and 25 percent polyester. This innovative material recycles nylon waste such as fishing nets, fabric remnants and used carpets into new nylon. ECONYL® has excellent friction and abrasion resistance and is 100 percent renewable. The fibers can be recycled, reshaped and spun at any time without any loss of quality.
