Munich district under power: Electrification of further regional bus routes

The district of Munich is systematically continuing its efforts to electrify local public transport. On July 1, 2025, the MVV regional bus routes 222, 224 and 270 will be completely converted to operation with emission-free battery buses. This means that a total of 20 new, environmentally friendly buses that run exclusively on green electricity will be put into operation. Residents in the municipalities of Brunnthal, Grünwald, Neubiberg, Oberhaching, Ottobrunn, Pullach, Taufkirchen and Unterhaching in particular will benefit from this changeover. Electrification of these three lines can save more than 1,500 tons of CO₂ per year.

The new technology requires an adapted charging infrastructure. In future, bus route 224 will be operated as a depot charger and will only charge its batteries at the transport company’s depot. For routes 222 and 270, two state-of-the-art pantographs with a capacity of 300 kW will be installed in Höllriegelskreuth to enable rapid recharging during the drivers’ break times. The costs for the electrification and the charging infrastructure will be borne entirely by the district of Munich. The charging infrastructure on the route and the vehicle procurement are being funded by the federal government as part of the “Directive on the promotion of alternative drive systems for buses in passenger transport” funding guideline.

Before the new battery buses go into regular operation in July 2025, a comprehensive trial operation is planned in which the new charging infrastructure will be tested alongside the vehicles. This project is another important step in the Munich district’s overall strategy of converting all MVV regional bus routes to alternative drive systems. So far, five lines have already been successfully electrified, with more to follow.
