NEED research project launched: PEM wants to increase data literacy

The Chair of Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components (PEM) at RWTH Aachen University has started the research project “NEED” with Helmut Schmidt University (HMU) in Hamburg. The aim of the joint project is to sustainably increase the data competence of young scientists in electric vehicle production.

The main aim is to find out whether interactions in the manufacturing processes of electric vehicles can be identified and quantified using digital methods, how conventional, engineering-based modelling approaches can be replaced by data-based analysis methods, and how the skills acquired can be disseminated and sustainably anchored in both the scientific and industrial environment.

Up to now, the modelling of production processes and the associated interactions has mainly been done using conventional methods – such as simulations or statistical analyses. However, due to the high complexity and the enormous amounts of data, conventional modelling methods have reached their limits, which makes artificial intelligence methods necessary.
