Ford Capri: The legend returns as an all-electric SUV coupé

“There’s no such thing as boring for us. When we say we’re building a new legend, it has to make a bang,” said Dr. Christian Weingärtner, Managing Director Ford Germany, Austria and Switzerland, at the world premiere of the new, all-electric Ford Capri. Together with 2000 employees, he celebrated the new Ford Capri on the factory premises in Cologne-Niehl. The unveiling took place in London at the same time. Contrary to what the Capri fan community would have expected, the legend is mutating into an SUV coupé and will be the second electric vehicle to roll off the production line at the Ford Cologne Electric Vehicle Center in Cologne-Niehl from the end of the year, alongside the all-electric Ford Explorer.

For the market launch, Ford is equipping both the rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions with a lithium-ion NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) extended-range battery. In the rear-wheel drive version, the battery provides a net capacity of 77 kWh. The rear engine converts this energy into 210 kW (286 hp) peak power with a non-stop torque of 545 Nm. This enables the Ford Capri RWD to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds, with its top speed limited at 180 km/h.

The rear-wheel drive vehicle can achieve a range of up to 627 kilometers on a single charge. Recharging can be done either via alternating current with 11 kW at the wallbox at home or via direct current (DC) fast charging with a charging capacity of up to 135 kW at public charging points. The battery needs around 28 minutes to “fill up” from ten to 80 percent of its capacity at such a DC charging point.

The all-wheel drive version achieves this in 26 minutes: it is equipped with a charging capacity of 185 kW. Its extended-range battery with 79 kWh of usable capacity enables ranges of up to 592 kilometers. A unit on the front axle supplements the torque of the 545 Nm rear axle motor by an additional 134 Nm. In combination with the maximum output of 250 kW (340 hp), this enables a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds. The all-wheel drive version also allows a top speed of 180 km/h.
