Vianode: anode graphite with 90% lower CO2 footprint

Vianode, a Norwegian battery materials company offering sustainable anode graphite solutions, has presented targets for decarbonization, circular economy and safe operations in its first sustainability report. Anode graphite is the largest component of a lithium-ion battery by weight, typically around 70 kg per electric vehicle, and is essential for the transition. Vianode plans to produce anode graphite solutions with a 90% lower carbon footprint than conventional production methods and aims to supply 3 million electric vehicles annually by 2030.

“The energy transition encompasses all areas of life, including mobility and energy production. However, decarbonization and electrification are only possible with efficient energy storage, and electromobility and batteries can only be sustainable if the entire value chain is decarbonized. Vianode has the ambition to shape our industry by reducing the carbon footprint of synthetic anode graphite and aiming for net zero emissions. I am proud of what we have achieved so far and am aware that our first sustainability report is only the beginning of our journey, not the end,” says Burkhard Straube, CEO of Vianode.

Vianode has been producing anode graphite solutions in its industrial pilot project in Kristiansand, Norway, since 2021. Vianode’s technology center was opened in the same city in 2022. The next milestone is the opening of the first industrial-scale production plant in Herøya, Norway, in the second half of 2024.
