BYD: 100,000 electric vehicles for Uber

Electric vehicle manufacturer BYD announced a multi-year strategic partnership with Uber to place 100,000 BYD electric vehicles on the Uber platform in key global markets. The partnership, which will initially start in Europe and Latin America, will give Uber drivers access to the best pricing and financing options for BYD vehicles on the Uber platform and will be expanded to Australia, Canada, the Middle East and New Zealand at a later stage.

Both companies are market leaders in their segments: Uber has the most widespread ride service provider network with electric vehicles and BYD is the leading manufacturer of electric vehicles. By working together, the companies aim to reduce the overall cost of owning and using an electric vehicle for Uber drivers, accelerate the adoption of electric cars on the Uber platform worldwide and offer greener rides to millions of passengers.

To help drivers make the switch to a BYD vehicle, the companies’ joint efforts may also include discounts on charging, vehicle maintenance or insurance, as well as financing and leasing offers, depending on which solution is most suitable for drivers in a particular market. In addition, the two companies will also collaborate on the deployment of BYD autonomous vehicles to be used on the Uber platform in the future. As the largest on-
demand mobility and delivery platform in the world, Uber is able to bring autonomous vehicle technology to its customers around the world at scale.
“Uber and BYD share a commitment to innovate for a cleaner and greener world, and I look forward to working with Uber on this future,” said Wang Chuanfu, Chairman and President of BYD. “This is the largest global agreement of its kind and we are excited about the benefits our partnership with BYD will bring to drivers, passengers and cities,” said Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber. “When an Uber driver switches to an electric car, they can save four times the amount of emissions compared to a normal car driver, simply because they are on the road more. Many passengers also tell us that their first experience with an electric vehicle was on an Uber ride, and we look forward to bringing the benefits of e-mobility to more people around the world.”
