Shell: Go-ahead for truck charging stations

Shell has connected charging stations for trucks in public spaces to the grid at the Georgswerder Bogen service station in the Port of Hamburg. In the future, e-trucks will be able to charge here at high-performance charging points (360 kW) with 100 percent electricity from renewable energies via the Shell Card. The company is thus supplementing the existing offer of charging on company premises (Private Depot Charging) and at the same time giving the go-ahead for the development of a nationwide charging network. Shell will build the charging infrastructure for this at important transport hubs in Germany by probably 2025. The next truck charging stations are planned for Hanover.

According to the EU Commission, truck manufacturers are to reduce the CO2 emissions of their newly registered vehicles by 90 percent by 2040. Accordingly, after offering LNG trucks and mass-producing hydrogen trucks, manufacturers are now pushing ahead with truck electrification. According to Statista, 43,700 trucks with an electric drive were already registered in Germany at the beginning of last year. And the trend is rising.

Shell is now countering this demand with the corresponding supply, while also supporting strategic partners such as the Port of Hamburg. “In its transformation to a zero-emissions port, the Port of Hamburg is relying on electric mobility, among other things. As an infrastructure service provider, it is of particularly great interest to the HPA to set up enough charging stations at central hubs, also for heavy-duty traffic. For this reason, the installation of the e-charging point for trucks is a milestone for Shell, but also for us as the Port of Hamburg on our way to a green future,” says Myriel Newerla, Head of Office at the HPA’s Executive Board.

As a provider of charging solutions in the heavy-duty sector, Shell is also further expanding on-site operational charging – so-called private depot charging – in addition to the public charging network. The advantage of a charging infrastructure in the company’s own depot is that the vehicles are always fully charged when they are needed and can also be charged overnight.

Shell’s integrated depot charging solutions are tailored to individual charging requirements. The scalable infrastructure grows with the needs of logistics companies. The offering is complemented by optional integrated solutions for energy and fleet management, charging technology and software specifically for commercial fleets, and comprehensive advice on converting to e-drives. www.shell.de
