Svolt: Short blade batteries create range every minute

SVOLT Energy Technology Co., Ltd. has introduced three new prismatic short blade batteries for fast charging of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. The “Short Blade” technology combines the advantages of cylindrical cells with a simplified production method in a prismatic design that is both cost-efficient and powerful. It makes it possible to increase the charging speed and reduce production costs at the same time.

5C: Five times the charging power on an LFP basis

For traction batteries, the “C” is an indicator of the ratio of battery size to charging power. 1C means that a 50 kWh battery can be charged with a maximum of 50 kW. At 5C – currently the maximum in the battery industry – the same battery can theoretically be charged with five times the charging power, i.e. up to 250 kW. The new SVOLT “Short Blade” 5C fast-charging battery based on lithium iron phosphate is about to go into series production. The innovative energy storage system can be charged from ten to 80 percent in just ten minutes and offers a service life of 3,500 charging cycles. By comparison, high-performance lithium-ion batteries are designed for at least 1,000 complete charging cycles. With a battery capacity of 60 kWh and an assumed consumption of 20 kWh per 100 km, this corresponds to at least 300,000 km.

Future potential: 6C fast-charging battery based on NCM

SVOLT is demonstrating the potential of “short blade” technology with its world premiere of a 6C fast-charging battery based on NCM. It allows charging from ten to 80 percent SOC (state-of-charge) in just five minutes. For many electric vehicles, charging for the duration of a cup of coffee would mean an additional range of 500 to 600 kilometers. The high energy density of 240 Wh/kg enables battery packs with a capacity of 100 to 120 kWh, which corresponds to total ranges of well over 1,000 kilometers and thus also sets new standards.

NCM battery for plug-in hybrid vehicles

Another innovation is the “800 Volt 4C PHEV Dragon Armor” from SVOLT, an NCM battery for plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV). With an energy density of 250 Wh/kg, it offers 20 percent more capacity in the same installation space. The new energy storage system, which will go into production in mid-2025, will enable electric ranges of 300 to 400 kilometers for plug-in hybrid vehicles, which are becoming increasingly successful in many countries.

Customized solutions

Fly stacking technology, which achieves a stacking speed of 0.125 seconds per sheet, is already being used on a large scale at the Chinese production facilities in Yancheng, Shangrao and Chengdu, significantly increasing production efficiency. This technology makes it possible to stack the electrodes, the essential components of a battery, with high speed and precision. This not only speeds up the production process, but also improves the consistency and quality of the batteries. With the new “Short Blade” cells, SVOLT offers fast-charging batteries in the 2.2C to 6C range.
