Electrified beer logistics: Augustiner Bräu supplies bottling plant with e-trucks

Since the beginning of the year, two Volvo FM Electric articulated lorries have been running in two shifts between the Augustiner brewery in Munich city center and the bottling plant in Freiham for Munich’s oldest private brewery (since 1328). The heavy trucks do not cause any noise that could disturb the brewery’s residents in the city center. Not even in road traffic and not when emptying the load.

The decisive factor for Volvo Trucks was the early test run with a Volvo Electric, which was completed at Augustiner with good results. The modular battery system played a decisive role in this. Five instead of six battery packs, each with 90 kilowatt hours (kWh), are completely sufficient for this specific transport solution. The resulting lower tare weight increases the payload reserves of the two Volvo FM Electric vehicles, thus improving transport efficiency.

Three electric motors deliver 666 hp of continuous power to the automated I-Shift transmission, which shifts imperceptibly and only slightly. In braking mode, the motors work as powerful continuous brakes and generators at the same time. In addition to wear-free deceleration, they recuperate the braking energy and use it to charge the high-voltage batteries of the tractor units. This proves to be particularly advantageous in local traffic.
